oh so creamy

i am craving hibachi factory like CRAZY.

they’re open till 11.

i could take a bath in the hibachi sauce.

it turns out i have car keys to drive with and money that i can trade for goods and services.

there is only one outcome i care to ponder…

my stomach full of hibachi sauce, rice, and sauteed vegetables.

how apropos, rob.

freewill.gifVIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It’s time to take down the “Under Construction” signs and clean up the messes from your works in progress. At least for now, your heart has lost its drive for further renovation and rehabilitation. Whether you think you’re ready or not, then, it’s time for a grand re-opening. I suggest you offer free toasters or other incentives to pull in new clients, as well as to coax disaffected old ones into returning.
It may also help to put up an “Under New Management” sign.

so is that the shut up and get started call to arms that i think it might be? i’ve been reading food, not lawns, have been taking a shit load of pictures, experimenting with candle scents, and recently learned how to knit poorly (working on doing it well!). i’ve had my eye on a sewing machine and my bookmarks folder is full of bookmarks. this is interesting because i never keep bookmarks and now i have a metric assload. Cross-stitch patterns, fabrics, yarn, melt and pour soap bases, photography, candle scents, knitting needles, css hacks, organic fertilizer, orchids, rainbow brite costumes………

i believe i will cool it a little with adding things for myself to do and enjoy what i’ve got going on already. perhaps i’ll get around to making my bed every day.

i think tonight is a good night for lentil stew seeing as how it snowed. nothing goes well with cold like hot things in a bowl.

it’s over

i wanted to post about this last night, but i was too exhausted to bother. i’ve never kept up with a tv show but top chef sort of grabbed a hold of me and duct taped me to the couch.

Yay Ilan! I know you actually won back in November, or something, but go you. My favorites from the beginning were Ilan, Betty, and Sam. I was pretty sad when Sam was eliminated, but he was one of the final 4. Go you too, Sam Hottie McSexypants, for winning the fan favorite award.

Nothing that Marcel made is anything i would have eaten. He was just too…out there. he and his “flavor profiles” and foams. Gelees. I don’t know enough cooking terms, but his food wasn’t food. they were organic conceptual dishes from mars.

ecobags & shitshakes

today, i have a review, of sorts, to share. well, one is me gushing about the wonderfulness of something. the other is me earnestly warning you to NOT try the other thing.

first, good news! i finally got off my ass and got my shopping bag set.

4 short handled organic string cotton bags, 1 long handled organic string cotton bag, 1 large produce bag, and 1 black hemp stuffsack to cram it all into and take to the store.

hugo, who reiterated he would NOT use the bags and would not use the bags when going to the store with me…ended up using the bags yesterday night. We filled an entire buggy full of stuff into 4 bags. i was able to carry all the groceries upstairs by myself because the bags hold a LOT more than a plastic bag and the handles don’t cut into your hand and make you feel like you’re dragging around cinder blocks wrapped in razor wire.

the bags are made in india with fair labor/fair wage. they feel handmade but that may be mostly my imagination because i get a warm fuzzy thinking about a giant roomful of women crocheting shopping bags and earning their own money.

i liked not having to throw away 20 plastic bags after we were finished. dub even got in on the action. getting the bags was one of my 101 in 1001 which is more my constantly evolving list of things to do. as soon as i organize it and finalize it i’ll crosspost it.

now for the bad news. one of the newsletters that i subscribe to offered me a free sample of Better World’s Shaman Smoothies. The Maca Spiced Chai was the one that showed up. i was sceptical yet hopeful. it promised a burst of energy and the enzymatic properties were going to change my life.

it did change my life; i now know what it tastes like to have a liquid turd in my mouth.

when i opened the packet it smelled like any other chai mix. cloves. cinnamon. standard stuff. when i put it in the blender with some water (i didn’t have any soy milk) and a little bit of vanilla yogurt and turned it on to frappe…some sort of evil smell came out of the blender. i thought it had maybe broken and something plastic was smouldering inside the metal casing. i wasn’t so lucky. i have never smelled anything that foul in my kitchen, including the weeks we were potty training dub.

i am not one to be hasty, though. I poured it into a glass and the smell worsened. bottoms up and i gagged.

i just wanted to warn you, internets. beware the shaman smoothies.

fooding my face

at the risk of sounding insane i’m going to say that i think my palate has finally changed. (and seriously, thank gods for sites like these that keep me from “saying” stupid things.)

i’ve been randomly experimenting with foods i know i shouldn’t eat lately.
exhibit a: 1 gas station hot dog that was fed to the dog because it seriously turned my stomach to even look at it.
exhibit b: last night at dinner jaime ordered some french onion burger and carla a medium rare steak. i was like “goddamn i bet that tastes good. *sad face sigh*” they let us take their leftovers home for dub. i took one look at the burger that was gnarled with fat and chunks of who knows what and happliy fed it to mr dub. i picked up the steak remnants that were still dripping with au jus, aka blood, and tried not to wretch. he definitely got that part too.

lately all i have been craving is fresh, raw food. if i had a sharp enough knife, i would have tried my hand at sushi today. instead i bought a veggie roll snak pak at kroger and it was fresh and delicious and have i mentioned how much i love avocados. it really is expensive to eat fresh though. anyone who says it isn’t is full of shit. and may the force be with you if you want to eat fresh AND organic. in the summer, when you can go to the farms and they have things you can pick up, it isn’t so bad. but since i wasn’t planning on this phenomenon i am caught a little unprepared.

even boxed food that i used to eat *all the time* now bores me and leaves me entirely unsatisfied. one food i will never tire of? Fantastic Foods chicken soup cups. i think it’s time i order a few cases.

i think once i have a better understanding of where things are going this year, i’ll try the farmers market in knoxville and the co-op on broadway. hell, i might just go nuts and buy some shares or volunteer.
