Feeding The Spiders

so, what’s new, bug?

It’s a lot to fake but pay no mind
Because this is how we’re made.

I’ve been obsessed with my camera (again) since the new lens came. Those things are expensive but worth every penny. It is a Canon 50mm f/1.4 and it is photographic sex.

I am selling my Cobalt. I have another more efficient and utilitarian car to drive now (and pay for) so I gotta get rid of it. Probably going to put it in the paper next week after I have it detailed. 06 purchased in Sept 05, 28k miles, Black on black, 2.4l SS.

I had my hair color touched up on Friday. It’s black with red areas; I wouldn’t necessarily call them highlights. Eyebrows had to be done too since Coco chewed up my brow pencil and I had been without eyebrows for a slight eternity. After she did my brows i was like HOLY HELL i need to wax…so I went home and did that. Ow.

Tonight my mother and I baked vegan bread together and it was GOOD. Evidence:

Vegan Mediterranean Olive Bread

We baked at her house because she has a bazillion kitchen gadgets. Evidence: I would have totally forgotten that you needed to grind the flax seeds and would have had no way to grind them. My mother had a coffee grinder handy and it worked like a champ. Thank you, Colleen.

Tomorrow I am going to make about a 3 dozen vegan peanut butter cookies. There is life after cupcakes and it is delicious.

What do I miss most about my old habits? Being able to run out and grab any old food without thinking twice. How much do I miss it? Not that much, really. I’m not 100% vegan yet…I oscillate still…but it is always on my mind.

A cool thing: Kroger’s Premium Selection Organics are labeled right on the front if they are vegan or not. Have I mentioned today how much I love Kroger???

feel free to call it what it is

i have never seen anyone in my family cook with fresh garlic. to be honest, my family doesn’t cook with much of anything that is “fresh.” there is lots of dumping out of boxes and cans which works out ok and it’s how i was raised but now i know better. i, myself, love slicing and smashing and dicing things that had recently been growing on a vine or buried in the dirt. on a whim i decided to buy fresh garlic for the sage risotto. since opening the first bulb and using 4 cloves i have been randomly grabbing it, inhaling the wonderful garlic smells, and looking around hoping that no one catches me do this. i admit it to you, internet, because you know how i feels and i always keep it real with you.

i was really behind on blogs these past few weeks because i was too busy groping produce. to my deeeelight You Grow Girl’s latest installment was on propagating garlic…from garlic. garlic is so awesome it grows itself. i am in love. garden. next year. i’m so there.

food

following the wildly successful vegetarian thanksgiving activities i had a pizza with cheese on it last night. my body is asking me if i am dumb. answer: yes. the risotto failed but screw difficult, time consuming, expensive rice dishes anyway. the roasted brussels sprouts were phenomenal. it was really bliss and i was happy to be able to bring something new and delicious to the table.

hugo and i have decided that eating with our non-vegetarian clan is not going to happen next year or any year after that. we’ll make our own dinners and show up after the food has been put away. i would love to host the get together at our house and show our people you can have a FEAST without anything needing to be slaughtered. unfortunately, we don’t have anywhere to put people so it will be a while before we can do that.

i talked with hugo about the stomach thing1 and the consensus is that i should not drink apple juice of any type ever again. watering it down doesn’t help. That brings me to a total of 2 juices that I can drink without gastric upset: orange juice and cranberry juice. Both of which I have to cut with water or…more upset.

cheer

i have a recipe for rice pudding. i have put all of our decorations up. i have celtic christmas music at the ready. i love this season, but not the actual holiday. if you pay attention to the commercialized side of the holiday it never lives up to the hype. christmas as it has been dictated to me always disappoints so this year i am celebrating Yule in my own non-re constructionist way. Oh and send me your address if you’d like a pagan holiday card sent your way. bug [at] feeding the spiders dot com

busy

i took care of some things i was putting off today (a few updates to various websites and paperwork) which has left my conscience 99% guilt free. the 1 percent is the MASSIVE amount of laundry i need to take care of. tomorrow i’m going to make the beds and just get it over with.

also on the agenda is a new theme for FTS. i have pared this one down to almost nothing and it’s still being a douche and taking forever to load. i did several tests tonight with various themes and redoable is definitely bloated. things i like about redoable: sidenotes, 2nd sidebar, clean layout, interesting paragraph classes. things i don’t like: takes forever to load, a little too dark, feels claustrophobic, has various bugs that make things break and look horrible.

coco

she is still in season. i thought it was over so i let her sleep in my room with me (on the floor, thank god) and woke to a bunch of spots on the carpet next to my bed. poor baby. lesson: do not put off having your animals spayed or neutered.

1. perhaps you didn’t hear about this. i woke up the day after thanksgiving with my gut aching and burning. i’ve not had a stomach ache since i was a little kid and it was extremely unpleasant. things i know it wasn’t: gas, heartburn, indigestion, or an extreme need to poop. probably: i should learn to stop drinking garbage.

Grocery Shopping

October6

I had to return some really crappy books to Borders and I needed groceries soooooo I went over to Turkey Creek to get everything done.

I traded in books of suckitude for La Dolce Vegan because my 1,000 Vegetarian Recipes has less vegan recipes than I would like. It’s very good business.

At Earthfare, I found the bulk quinoa and bought a little under a pound of it. In the bulk section they also had nutritional yeast flakes which I have been wanting to try almost as badly as the quinoa, so i got a little bit of that too. Long grain & wild rice. Whole wheat couscous. This reminded me that I really need to invest in some more reusable bags. On second thought…nutritional yeast + cloth bag might not be the best option. I’ll think of something.

“Know thyself”, they say, so here are the main problems I have with shopping in general.

  • If I have to buy one of something and if I have the money, I might as well buy 12 of them and save myself from having to go out soon to get another one when I run out
  • I like well designed labels…a lot.
  • There’s a lot of stuff I don’t have and when I need it, I really need it right.effing.then. Such as baby wipes and dried cilantro.

So sometimes I can get away with spending $20 on groceries at walmart or food lion but inevitably I will get a hair up my butt and insist on dropping $200 at Earthfare. Luckily, this does not happen nearly as often as it could. The nice thing about EF’s produce section was that everything was in good shape, clean, well organized, and it appeared to me that it was all organic. I could get organics cheaper at Kroger, but since there is a price differential between organic and non organics, most people opt for the cheaper version and the organics are left to wilt and rot. If you’re doing all of your shopping at EF, you can probably afford organics anyway and you’re going to want some pretty and fresh organics.

I’ve put my receipt for the day’s haul if you’re interested in seeing prices. I bought some Biokleen products and some holistic dog food…nothing terribly interesting. The Biokleen dishwasher powder was $8.99 and not $12+ as I had previously thought which makes it an even more killer deal since the last time I bought any was at the beginning of August and we still had some left. Also, you will probably notice that Vegan Pumpkin Pie is not marked as non essential…because it’s VEGAN PUMPKIN PIE; as essential as air.

Earthfare Receipt

In other news, there is a health food store opening in Brown’s Creek. If you know where that is and you know where I live you can probably guess how fucking excited I am right now.
