baby
today is Hugo’s birthday. Happy Birthday, baby, I love you. : )
today my sister in law is going to the hospital in a few hours to be induced and shortly thereafter (hopefully for the both of them) my nephew will be born. i’m still the only virgo in the family.
it’s weird that both of my brothers are married and have children. i’m the only one without kids. i’m the only one not married. i always thought i would have children by now and the more time that passes the more i oscillate on the idea. [edit: anyone who knows me, knows this is crap. what i really always thought? that i’d have killed myself a long time ago and there was no point in making any plans for anyone or anything.]
on one hand…kids change your life. on the other hand…kids change your life.
tomatoes
our local food lion has done some miraculous things to their selections of food and made me a happy bug. i was wandering around the frozen vegetables and spotted pre battered green tomatoes. did you just hear the angel choir too? i grabbed a bag (i forget how much they were) and headed homeward.
last night i pulled out the deep fryer and gave them a 5 minute bath in 350* oil. here is what i don’t understand about fryer times on packaging. you’re essentially throwing ice cubes in the oil so the temperature is going to change dramatically. when the frozen water hits the oil it burns off and the vapor/steam goes up up and away. Our fryer always takes an extra minute to two to get the level of crispiness most people expect. Anyone else notice this or do you fry by the book?
the tomatoes were excellent. the batter was well seasoned and didn’t need salting. the actual tomatoes were toothy around the edges but soft in the middle. my only gripe is that they held onto a LOT of the oil. i drained them for several minutes then put them on paper towels. the towels were soaked and the actual pieces were still greasy ass hell after being patted down again. i might get them again and make them in a pan, but probably not. i hate getting popped with hot grease and that is why I have a fryer with a lid.
palette
i have been listening to oprah and friends on XM. it sounds strange even to me. i’m talking about babies and oprah in the same blog post. it is really a much more enlightened version of her tv show and her magazine and i’ll leave my defense of it there.
so anyway, dr oz was on and talking about your palette and how the modern american diet has totally fucked most people’s palette’s all to hell. I have noticed several changes in my own palette in the last year or so. I am constantly craving whole wheat, hot spices, and fruits & vegetables. when jess and i made curried couscous after the first bite my mind said that was exactly what I wanted! then i made a pig out of myself. it was good business.
does anyone have any hot n spicy recipes to share with me? Its time to get going with the festivities…enjoy your sundays everyone.
